about

This release was recorded live at the venue h0l0 in Ridgewood Queens on January 31, 2020. Bharoocha was invited by Susie Ibarra to perform at a festival she organized called ‘drumXdrum: a festival of polyrhythms’ where he performed alongside musicians such as Pheeroan Aklaff, Brian Chase, Yuka C. Honda, and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe.

This performance was made possible using drum sensors and software created by Sunhouse / Sensory Percussion. A singular drum sensor is attached to each drum, in this case 4 drums total. All the sounds layered on top of the acoustic drum sounds are programmed by Bharoocha and performed live. No additional sounds were added to this live mix in post production.

Bharoocha felt a deep connection with Ibarra’s drumming background through their shared love for the history of Asian drumming, percussion, and the western trap kit. Based on this connection he felt with Ibarra, Bharoocha chose sounds that came from his cultural background (Japanese / Indian / Myanmar decent) to create a set of semi-improvisational short pieces that reflected on his memories of growing up, intertwined with his culture as well as bringing in the influence of western urban culture he has absorbed through living in The United States for most of his adult life. Some sonic elements were chosen to channel childhood memories of summer street festivals in Japan, the sound of fireworks heard at riverside parks, the noises from Pachinko parlors and other urban sounds he heard growing up in Tokyo. Bharoocha also wanted to channel his Indian / Myanmar side by incorporating sounds that reminded him of traditional Myanmar music as well the aging pop music cassettes he found there while he visited several years ago. All these sonic memories were merged in this set of short musical pieces to bring about the conversation of memory and ones affinity to certain sounds as well as how memory and sound interplay with each other and trigger visions from the past when connecting with present experiences.

Bharoocha and label head Brian Chase decided to create one of a kind artwork for each of these limited edition cassettes. The artwork is all one of a kind and created by Bharoocha by hand.
